He was the third of five sons, but Richard I became known as a great warrior and military commander during the Third Crusade.  When he was a teenager, his mother Eleanor of Aquitaine helped to lead him and his elder brothers in a revolt against their father, Henry II, as the eldest of the siblings, called Henry the Young King, sought to claim his father’s crown solely as his own instead of as a co-ruler, but this failed, and when Henry II died, predeceased by his first two sons, Richard was left to rule as his heir.  Although born in England, Richard spent most of his life either on campaign in the Holy Land or in France, where he died ten years later of an infected arrow wound to the shoulder at the age of 41 .  His heart was buried in Rouen, Normandy while his body was laid to rest in Fontevraud Abbey in Anjou, France.
