1809 – Edgar Allan Poe is Born

One of the world’s most legendary authors, Poe is particularly known for his chilling works such as The Tell-Tale Heart and poetry like The Raven and Annabel Lee.  Even so, the height of his fame did not come until after his mysterious death in 1849, when he became an icon of the macabre and all things frightening and celebrated as one of the great classic writers of all time.  Today, an award that goes to distinguished authors of the mystery genre is named for him – the Edgar Award, winners of which include James Patterson, Raymond Chandler, and Stephen King.
