1066 – Edward the Confessor Dies, The Norman Conquests Begin

05 Jan

Canonized as Saint Edward a century following his death, the English king died childless at the age of sixty-two.  This led to war between Brittany, Normandy, and France over who would take England’s throne (AKA the Norman Conquests).  In the end, William the Conqueror would establish the Norman Dynasty, which ended in 1154 with the death of King Stephen of Blois and the succession of Henry II, first of the Plantagenets.  Pictured above is Edward’s tomb in Westminster Abbey.
