Queen Victoria was devastated when her husband passed away. They had been married for two decades and had nine children during their devoted union. She was very much in love with Albert, who happened to be her cousin, and gushed in her diary that the day of their wedding was “the happiest day of my life.” However, the Queen outlived her beloved husband by forty years thanks to what was diagnosed as typhoid fever but may more likely have been stomach cancer. He was forty-two years old. Victoria never remarried and wore black for the remainder of her life.
