1793, the Execution of Marie Antoinette

On the morning of 16 October 1793, Maria Antonia Josepha Johanna Habsburg-Lorraine, also known as Marie Antoinette, Queen of France and Navarre and widow to the executed King Louis XVI (both pictured above vis their funerary monument in Saint Denis Basilica in Paris), was taken to the Place de la Concorde, where she herself was beheaded by the guillotine.  She was thirty-seven years old, the daughter of Holy Roman Emperor Francis I and his wife Empress Maria Theresa, proclaimed Archduchess of Austria at birth, and mother to four children.  Her last words were of apology to her executioner, whose foot she had accidentally stepped on.
